Mr. Ames has worked in pipeline corrosion control and operations for 40 years, creating internal and external corrosion management programs for multiple operators over that time. He served with Northern Natural Gas in the Liberal, Kansas area for more than 15 years, then a major Houston-based natural gas production/transmission/distribution company. Mike has worked with U. S. DOT, PHMSA and many state agencies in rulemaking, guidance document preparation, and regulatory audit protocols since the 1990’s. Work areas have included internal and external corrosion control of pipeline and compressor station facilities, transmission and gathering lines, smart pigging interpretation and recommendations, risk assessment program implementation and analysis. He has worked extensively in oil midstream and transmission companies, including liquid product transmission systems both in the USA and in South America. He has mastered programs including Bass CPDM, FERA, PILARS, IAP, PHD, RSTRNG2, KAPA, CIS Surveys, as well as spreadsheet generation for analysis of problems. He has provided project coordination in field operations and ISAT task forces.

Mike has been a NACE International Director for the Central Area, serving on the worldwide board. He has been a trustee for NACE sections, and a NACE course instructor for many years. Mr. Ames provides cathodic protection system design, troubleshooting and support. He reviews CP survey data and makes recommendations for system improvements, remedies. Mike regularly supports clients in their preparation for regulatory audits and has helped clients through many regulatory audits. He is also expert in AC-power-induced safety and corrosion issues, and in design/installation of mitigation for those issues. In addition, Mike holds senior level NACE International credentials and has significant experience in internal corrosion control, in-line inspection (or “smart pigging”), maintenance pigging, and integrity management. Mike is a fluent Spanish speaker and writer and has performed corrosion control work across most of South America, Central America and Mexico, in addition to work across North America.

Mike has been engaged in the production of international programs such as Pipeline Integrity, AC Mitigation, and Risk Based assessment as well as serving on numerous technical committees over decades of service to the pipeline industry. He is one of only 5 certified NACE International Navigators, world-wide.
